The Trend Towards Biodegradable Plastics

Stories on cities or countries taxing or banning plastic bags and/or food packaging:

Bombay, Isaaquah, London, Los Angeles, Richmond, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle,

China, Ireland, Malaysia.

The list is becoming nearly endless. A recent search on Google for "plastic bag bans" resulted in nearly a million references!

Composting dramatically reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to landfilling.

Consumers

Consumers are responding to the popular trend of bio-products by demanding and buying more green products. This makes them a powerful catalyst for pushing companies and governments toward change.

Enterprises

Enterprises today are becoming more aware of the advantages a green environment offers. Therefore they are adapting their business strategies and philosophies to become more sustainable. Many companies see sustainability as a great opportunity for revenue growth, reputation enforcement and cost reduction.

Governments

Consumers are putting pressure on governments and their suppliers to provide them with environmentally friendly products. In response, there are more restrictive policies and laws to prohibit the use of petrochemical based materials and decrease the amount of polluting industries.

Cities, states and countries around the world are banning or taxing plastic bags and food packaging. In most areas, those taxes and prohibitions are not applicable to bioplastics. With growing pressure to combat global warming, regulations and fines on traditional plastics are likely to increase.

Another major trend is citywide composting. Municipalities are seeing the cost-benefits to divert food waste and packaging from landfills into composting systems. Seattle, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver and others around the world have recognized that the use of compostable bioplastics can dramatically reduce landfill space, while providing a positive feedback loop (creating organic compost for local farms).

In the US, 103 city mayors have made a commitment to a Zero Waste policy, to completely eliminate the need for landfills which are a dramatic (and often unrecognized) source for greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, according to Stop Trashing the Climate, ending landfill use will dramatically reduce the amount of methane released into the atmosphere. Methane is 72 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2!

"Significantly decreasing waste disposed in landfills and incinerators will reduce greenhouse gases - the equivalent to closing one-fifth of U.S. coal-fired power plants."
